A Lifetime of Teaching, A Heart for Every Child
My journey as a maths tutor began around 1989, while I was studying at university. What started then has remained a much-loved part of my life. More than three decades later, I am still teaching, and I still find joy in helping a child understand something they once thought was beyond their reach.
There is a special moment in teaching when uncertainty turns into understanding. A student who quietly says, “I can’t do this,” begins to say, “Let me try.” That small change means so much to me. Behind it is growing confidence, courage and a willingness to keep going.
Every child learns differently. Some need a little more time, some need a different explanation, and some simply need someone to believe in them while they learn to believe in themselves. I want my students to feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. A mistake should be the beginning of a conversation, never a reason for a child to feel ashamed.
Good examination results matter, and I work with my students to help them achieve their potential. But my hopes for them reach beyond a grade on a certificate. I want them to develop patience, independence and the confidence to face challenges—in their studies and in their lives.
I also care deeply about the people they are becoming. Through teaching, I hope to encourage kindness, honesty, respect and consideration for others. Learning to listen, asking for help politely, taking responsibility and supporting someone who is struggling are small habits that help children grow into thoughtful members of society.
For me, teaching is a privilege. Parents place their trust in me, and children allow me to be part of their journey. I take that responsibility to heart. Each lesson is an opportunity to help a young person feel more capable, more valued and more hopeful about their future.
Maths Academy is built on that belief: every child deserves encouragement, patient guidance and the chance to grow.
After all these years, my love for teaching remains. If I can help a child understand maths, believe in themselves and become a kind, responsible person, then I feel I have made a contribution that truly matters.
